(Alternative) Alternative Winter Break 2020
(Alternative) Alternative Winter Break will engage teens over four days of winter break. Participants will engage in Jewish and service learning, volunteer work and community building. The sessions will be facilitated by Repair the World and Grow Torah‘s educational teams, and Young Judaea’s experienced team of madrichim (counselors). The days will be divided into virtual learning and community building as well as virtual and some in-person volunteering.
In congruence with our National Social Action Initiative of food insecurity, our program will focus on food justice through a Jewish lens and its intersection with racial injustice.
Our volunteer opportunities will include but are not limited to:
-Write recipes based on food pantry items and decorate cards for food pantry boxes for the Met Council
–Free Minds Poetry Response Project: Read incarcerated and formerly incarcerated youth poets’ writing & give positive feedback.
-Phone bank with Hunger Free America to individuals eligible for government assistance to share information about child nutrition benefits
-Volunteer at a food pantry in either NYC, Pittsburgh, or Miami
-Volunteer at an urban farm in either NYC, Pittsburgh, or Miami
